SHOTS FIRED!!

We live in the west side, a (supposedly) very safe part of Los Angeles.  Several years ago I was in the mall at the corner of Pico & Westwood, shopping at the May Company.  As I was exiting the store to go into the main mall I heard an odd noise.  It was like pop, pop, pop, pop; very close together.  Then lights started to go on & off.  I was confused & had an uncomfortable feeling, so I went back into the store.  I soon found out what was happening.  Some gang members had come across members of a rival gang in the mall & started shooting at them.  What I heard had been gunshots!!  I had never before (or since) heard of gangs or gang colors in this neighborhood.

Are any of you old enough to remember the Watts Riots in 1965?  They burned up to around Wilshire & La Cienega, less than four miles from our house.  Those are the only times I've ever been frightened living here, except for our neighbor, Bill.  I told you about him, here.

Enough of this.  I need some happy stuff:

This was a happy time for my son & his ex-wife:

And I've had lots of happy times in my life!!
(See tomorrow's post)

  1. LOVELY to see a post from you. I was starting to worry when there wasn't one last night.
I really don't understand guns. They are relatively rare here, and I am happy with that.
Liked the cartoon with the signs though. A lot.

  3. Had a good laugh at the Indians shooting guns at the stagecoach :)
I'm very thankful to live in a country where most people don't have guns.

  4. Guns are pretty popular in Florida. I'm not afraid in my neighborhood (we have a low crime rate for our city), but bad things happen everywhere. Someone nearby had his door kicked in by two guys in the middle of the night. That someone happened to work at a gun range. He shot and killed one of the men. I don't know what happened to the other one. That will never happen in my house because I don't own a gun and don't know how to use one. My alarm will go off, though, while Franklin, Penelope, and I hide.

    Love,
    Janie

  5. Yikes, is anyplace safe these days? Shopping, church, pizza?? I remember those riots. Four miles was too close. Kind of wish "Bang" and "You got me" were for real.

  6. Violence all around is getting really bad, it's scary to go anywhere now because we don't know what will happen next, the only thing we can do is to continue living our lives because hiding out and waiting is not an option for me.

  7. Most people have at least one gun around here, but there are surprisingly few shootings. Even the headless body found in the septic tank wasn't shot. He was beaten with a baseball bat. I don't think there's a waiting period on buying a bat.
