This riddle doesn't seem like it should be hard,
but it's much trickier than it appears. The Heaven and Hell problem was
famously included in the movie "Labyrinth," in which Jennifer
Connelly's character gives the correct answer (er, the correct question). There
are multiple ways to phrase the question, but it will lead you to the right
door 100 percent of the time. Scroll down to read the puzzle, and keep
scrolling for the answer.
Here's the Puzzle
You're standing between the door to heaven and
the door to hell. A guard stands by each door. One guard always tells the
truth, and the other always lies. You don't know which guard is which. What one
question can you ask a guard to find out which door leads to heaven? Keep scrolling to read the answer.
I'm pointing at the answer, not the door!!
Here's the Answer
Drumroll, please...
As
I mentioned, there are multiple ways to phrase the correct question that will
give you the answer you want. You would ask this question: Which door would the
lying guard say goes to heaven? If you asked the honest guard, that guard will
point toward the door to hell. If you asked the lying guard, that guard will
point toward the door to hell. Either way, you will be directed to the door to
hell, so you know the one that the guard does not point to is the door to
heaven. Did you get it?
